Is automake installed on your system? AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE would indicate missing automake. Possibly
libtool. I'm unclear about the specific dependencies for Debian for building https://github.com/apache/couchdb/blob/master/INSTALL.Unix
recommends `sudo apt-get install build-essential`. I don't think anything is wrong with the
make file here, just missing dependencies. You'll want to make sure you have autoconf, autoconf-archive,
automake and libtool installed.
