Actually, Chris, all the flags can be set via exports.

See `man erl` and look for ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES at the bottom.

ERL_AFLAGS or ERL_ZFLAGS are what you want.

because large-scale deployments of couchdb need to pass some limits on to erlang. For example,
