would typically be the most correct place for this kind of data to be written, specifically
(in the same way that mysql's daemon config lives in /etc/mysql/, but it writes the raw datafiles
containing its databases in /var/lib/mysql)

I don't particularly mind how the data is stored (although LDAP seems like overkill for simple
one key/one value user data), and if there is already an alternative option we can use I would
definitely investigate that, I just care as a sysadmin about /etc/ being easy to manage :)
