I already tried running couchdb directly by hand, as the couchdb user. It
shows nothing - no console output, no listening on port 5984.

I only ran from the init script last time because you suggested editing
etc/default/couchdb, and that's sourced in the init script (i.e. it doesn't
affect running couchdb directly from the command line, AFAICS)

Any more suggestions?
