Thanks, Jesse!  I tried that:
...
ldap.config.mapper.attribute.user.id=cn
ldap.config.mapper.attribute.user.base.dn="dc=example,dc=com"
ldap.config.mapper.attribute.user.object.class=person
...
and got:
Caused by: javax.naming.InvalidNameException: "dc=example: no close quote

(And it seems to work without quotes for the bind dn, which also has a comma...)

I'm going to try the latest Continuum + Redback and see if it's any different.
