mvn -U is actually the best way because the plugin registry isn't optimal yet 
(http://maven.apache.org/guides/introduction/introduction-to-plugin-registry.html) and will
be 
refactored in maven 2.1 and/or 2.2.

File an issue and we'll look at it if possible when we'll implement continuum profiles in
1.1
