We= were talking South Africa specifically given our origins but in general th= e continent=92s awake to tech and open source and S. Africa=92s just one pa= rt. The essence of our discussions distilled down to - make a monetary busines= s case for it and it could happen - so I just wanted to stick this out ther= e so the idea could maybe start to evolve=85 Reasons for it to happen: - There are a bunch of apache committers in S. Africa but honestly it=92s = super expensive for us to get to any ApacheCon elsewhere (flip side - it=92= s cheap to come to us) - It=92s a stunning venue! - S. Africa=92s the gateway to Africa in so much as importing tech is conc= erned (Nigeria and others aren=92t waiting for the world but are just inven= ting their own (Free software and open source foundatio= n for Africa) :) - There are big tech projects happening and more coming: i.e things to get= involved in / things to expose to ASF Eg: The Square Kilometer Array telescope o= r HPC community , or Space science and engineering community or energy = community or business - And just for kicks =96 apparently we know how to use water powered rocke= ts best (yesterday=92s slashdot) Honestly, I=92m sure others know more and better reasons than me too. Obvio= usly we're biased =96 it would benefit the S. Africa software community mor= e than anything else - but also think it=92d be a win for ASF community!
