I use it like this, and have no problems. (where the Mail. are properties)

HtmlEmail email = new HtmlEmail();
email.setHostName(Mail.SMTP_HOST);
email.setAuthentication(Mail.AUTHENTICATION_USERNAME,
Mail.AUTHENTICATION_PASSWORD);
