I figured it out:

use
introspector.setAttributesForPrimitives(true);

and in the betwixt file:
<element name="person">
  <element name="name" property="name" />
  <addDefaults/>
</element>

I wish the documentation was clearer. It took me some
time to figure this out. Perhaps add this to the FAQ?
