    Sorry for the initial post, after deeper investigation of Ant I 
realised tasks either finish or throw exceptions, hence;

     <j:catch var="exception">
          <a:javac srcdir="${src}"
             destdir="${build}"
             debug="on"
          />
      </j:catch>
