[~gilles]  the behavior you are looking as bug , I see it as feature ;-),  IMO rather throwing
NPE we should handle situation and reply appropriately and that's how many method works in
Commons Text , mentioning behavior in Javadoc of each method is good enough to tell users
how it will work.
