I can't be sure without you providing a bit more context - I do see two ins=
tances, but they are in different if blocks.  One is part of the "+" case, =
the other is for the "-" case.

(Light bulb) - I bet you are asking about the "++foo" construct itself?   I=
 guess it=E2=80=99s a result of learning C/C++ before Java.  My fingers wan=
ted to type=20
consumed_chars++;
but, of course, that's no good in Java.  I agree "foo=3D++foo;" looks a lit=
tle strange and I have no problem if you wish to change it to the equivalen=
t, but more traditional, "foo=3Dfoo+1;"
