Subject [jira] [Commented] (LANG-952) Inconsistent handling of empty string
Date Fri, 24 Jan 2014 13:46:37 GMT

Benedikt Ritter commented on LANG-952:
--------------------------------------

Another example is
{code:java}
StringUtils.isAlphaSpace(CharSequence)
{code}

which returns true for the empty String. Clearly the empty string is neither an alpha numeric
character nor a whitespace, so this should return false.

> As discussed on the ML (http://markmail.org/message/sfpmt4mv54om4cyf) and in LANG-823
some methods handle the empty string inconsistently. For example:
> {code:java}
> StringUtils.containsNone("", *) = StringUtils.containsOnly("", *) = true
> {code}
> In this example it makes no sense, that the empty string at the same time contains no
character and contains any character. There is no reason to treat the empty string specially.
It should be handled like an arbitrary string. It needs to be checked if there are more examples
for inconsistent empty string handling.
