For the records: I had the same issues and couldn't find a solution without a second thread
that doesn't need an unknown amount of memory.

Since this isn't easy to get right, I vote to add this code even though is seems "broken".
My rationale is this:

1. The code is useful
1. It's hard to get right
1. If there is a better solution (i.e. one without the second thread) the outside API doesn't
change, so it would be easy to fix later.
