You forget that cloning in this way is actually dangerous if you have objects in your graph that manage system resources like File or Socket or - even worse - have a pointer to native memory like BufferedImage. Cloning the last one in this way will corrupt your JVM. Maybe it is better to use a more (and very fast) specialized library instead: http://robust-it.co.uk/clone/
