My concern regarding the hashCode, Seb, is that a different calculation may be gotten on different
running VMs.  I am certainly open to making the field {{volatile}} if necessary, but TBH I
don't see why it would be, unless it's possible for hashCode() be called (a) before the constructor
has executed, or (b) before deserialization has completed.  Educate me here.  :)
