Try adding
    -Dcommons.surefire.version=2.11
works for me in Maven 2.2.1

Looks like Surefire 2.12 is borked for Java 1.4.
There's another issue with 2.12; it's no longer possible to specify a
single test with -Dtest=EmailLiveTest (for example).

We should probably revert to Surefire 2.11 for now...
