I checked the assembly plugin docs, and it does not say anything about
default descriptors.

So I don't know why that is mentioned in the above page.
Does the plugin work without the descriptors?

If not, perhaps ask on Maven Users.

But even if the plugin does not default to finding the files there, we
might as well use the directory recommended by the layout page.
