This particular dependency isn't optional at compile time (not for
lang which would be using it in its source).  It would be optional for
other projects that use lang of course (optional for compile time).

It means optional as in how maven considers stuff optional.  Again, if
we don't like the view, perhaps we should just supply a patch to the
plugin's JIRA?

If I remember, I'll try to upgrade it before the next release (which I
hope to do soon).
