Solution to bug #35294 still uses form.getAttributeNode("whatever"); I don't 
think this solves this bug (31534). As the description says: 

>document.getAttributeNode() is
>not supported by Internet Explorer 5.5 or earlier and breaks the validation

So IMO still struts will not work on ie 5.5 and this bug should remain open
