I suppose the problem lies in your call to clearTree(). This method removes all
children of the nodes in your list. addNodes() should work with complete new
node hierarchies.

I just found out that there is obviously no unit test for the addNodes() method.
Don't know, why. I created a new test in TestHierarchicalConfiguration, which
adds some new field nodes to a table. This works as expected. Please double check.
