As I said, I tried it with ant and it worked for me.

The close() is not in the public interface as this is a dangerous method in
multi-threaded/webapp environments, though there are so many requests to make it
accessible in some way that I would like to do so.

Ant calls this method through
org.apache.commons.vfs.tasks.VfsTask.
There you will find the project listener CloseListener which implements
buildFinished which will close VFS.
