Hm, I am sorry but I still do not see this as a valid test. It's kinda like
comparing apples and oranges: The two encode calls do not use the same target
encoding.

When you say:

String s1 =  myInstance.encode(s1);

You are asking to encode in UTF-8 (since myInstance.getDefaultCharset() returns
"UTF-8").

When you say:

String s2 = java.net.URLEncoder.encode(s);

You are encoding to the default platform encoding, usually not UTF-8.

The about is similar to (JRE 1.4 API):

String s2 = java.net.URLEncoder.encode(s, System.getProperty("file.encoding"));

If you compared to:

String s2 = java.net.URLEncoder.encode(s, "UTF-8");

You would get the same results.
