I guess beanutils won't cover everything. However, ConvertUtils has a registry 
of converters where you can register whatever converter you want. This is how I 
convert all of our enums.

About API changes: I agree that you have a problem there. I've tried the 
approach of creating my own class on top of yours, but ended up writing too much 
code to be worth it. I decided to roll my own (I already have an implementation 
of prefrences, I just needed to update it with new functionality). Maybe I'll 
post it to you when it is ready.
