Configuration doesn't use to be a performance critical part of an application.
Did you measure the overhead of enabling the interpolation ? I would be quite
interested in seeing the figures, I think no one studied this before. If this is
really critical I suggest adding a flag to disable the interpolation instead of
moving this core feature in a decorator.
