I understand the reason for your request, but would be reluctant to add this for
one main reason: 

Having redundant methods with varying numbers of Object params, to "emulate"
varargs functionality may be effective, but it's also butt-ugly.

Have you looked at http://just4log.sourceforge.net? It looks to me like adding
the just4log ant task as a final step in your ant builds should achieve what you
want. (This project is referenced from the commons-logging wiki pages).

I'm also wondering whether java1.5 "varargs" functionality is
backward-compatible, ie whether varargs methods compiled using java1.5 can then
be called from code compiled using earlier JVMs? Commons projects do ship with
code that won't compile *but will run* on 1.1 or 1.2; maybe a 1.5 dependency
would be acceptable if it is backward-compatible and brings a significant benefit...
