After a few false alarms and things that seemed to fix the problem I found that dumbster wont
play on 
*nix (at least OSX). 

Tried changing port to 2500 to avoid issues running as non root user. 
Played around with instantiating SimpleSmtpServer in various places. 

The dumbster guy has responded to my mail, saying he ran my test case on windows and it worked
(no 
suprises there). 

SimpleSmtpServer fakeMailServer = SimpleSmtpServer.start();
while(fakeMailServer.isStopped()) {
       System.out.println("trying to start mail server");
}
assertFalse(fakeMailServer.isStopped());
