Hi Dan

I can certainly appreciate why this behaviour is annoying but I'm not so sure how a sanity
check could 
reasonably be implemented in a thread-safe manner.  If you have a good idea, then please reopen

this bug and contribute a patch.

In any case, I've added a warning to the javadocs.
