I added patches and unit tests supporting the suggested feature, however, as
validator works exactly as the documentation suggests, I'm marking this as an
enhancement.  The question is whether we want to change the meaning of "strict"
to mean the pattern must match the entire field with no characters left over, or
leave it as the meaning the size of the pattern must equal the size of the field.
