I just used it to create a subclass of the PropertiesConfiguration which doesn't
barf when the file doesn't exist (and we do have optional configuration files).

I think that at least is a very feasible usecase. 

You are right, of course, using pluggable tags is a lot more consistent :) I'd
think about doing that before 1.0 though, it's quite a usability boost in my eyes.
