While it may sound strange, I have found it useful to add 'hidden' fields to those which are 
validated by the required validator.  The use case is when I have a complicated HTML interface, like 
cascading inter-dependent menus, where the menus themselves don't represent real data fields, 
but are used with javascript to set the value of a hidden field.
