You're right, chaining provides no benefit here.  The only reason I suggested
that getMd5Digest() be public is for precisely the conversion to a
RuntimeException.  I can't think of a single time I've used
MessageDigest.getInstance() where the checked exception didn't get in the way. 
No biggie, just thought it may be useful outside this class.  Anyhow, I'll be
quiet after this post, since I'm just glad this got accepted at all. ;)
