I think option II, one password per user, is acceptable.  Is there a database
that allows multiple passwords per username?  It does not seem like a good
security policy.

On the question of the master instance map, it is to allow for matching up of a
given instance of the datasource to the pooled connections.  If two places in
your code are requesting the datasource from jndi and are expecting connections
to the same db.  It is possible for jndi to return different objects to those
two lookups.
