ConvertUtils.register is provided exactly for this purpose. For (2) it would be great to check superclasses. I'm not sure how useful it is to have a "convert" method present. That means a class would have to know, apriori, all the other classes into which it could be converted. Diffucult to keep uptodate as new needs come into play - almost always leading to a mix between converters and convert methods.
