My suggestion (and preference) would be a "tunneled exception", like that
described at
<http://radio.weblogs.com/0122027/stories/2003/04/01/JavasCheckedExceptionsWereAMistake.html>
and elsewhere.  Note that this is distinct from a general purpose "nested
exception".
