Agreed, but your approach would limit the possible use cases, I think. Over in 
FOP we have several Encoders (ASCII85, ASCIIHEX, RunLength etc., all defined 
by the PostScript and PDF specs). We've had the Decoder/Encoder type of 
implementation at first. They have been replaced by OutputStream descendants 
which are more flexible especially when it comes to only encode a little part 
of an OutputStream (like a Flate- and ASCII85-encoded image within a PDF file).

I think if you want to go down the streaming road you don't get around 
InputStream and OutputStream descendants.
