... actually, it uses the AbandonedObjectPool which inherits from
GenericObjectPool. Since the AbandonedObjectPool does not override the
GenericObjectPool close() method, the GenericObjectPool's close() method is
called when the BasicDataSource is closed.

The GenericObjectPool close() only closes the connections idle in the pool.
What about the connections which are currently in use and maintained by the
AbandonedObjectPool?  They never get closed.  Ideally, the
AbandonedObjectPool should have a close() method which closes the "abandoned
connections" and then calls its super.close().

It would be great if this could be supported in a future release...

BasicDataSource.close uses GenericObjectPool.close to release the 
connections.
