this seems to me to be not so much about the issue of thread safety as about the broader 
issue of being able to maintain different lists of convertors.

it really doesn't matter whether it's one thread or many - it's slow and messy to maintain

more than one list of convertors. 

i've been thinking along similar lines to proposed solution for improved caching which 
has similar problems.

maybe i'll raise this on the dev list.
