Yes it would compatibility with log4j 1.1.x. The Category class will be 
kept until
2nd or 3rd quarter 2003. Hopefully most people would have migrated to log4j 
1.2 or
above by then.

On the other hand, people using ONLY commons-logging do not have a dependency
on the log4j API such that "all" they have to do is to replace 
log4j-1.1.x.jar with
log4j-1.2.jar in their applications.

It only gets complicated when you consider your "non-standard" users. :-)
