I don't think the status file is strictly necessary, but I like having it
around.  It's useful to know who and how many are working on a particular
component.  There don't seem to be any serious disadvantages to it...

+1. Let's just drop the status file.  I believe that Ted mentioned that
in my proposal for the update to the charter, which has now been deluged
by this thread...
