Non Commenting Source Statements (NCSS)

Statements for JavaNCSS are not statements as specified in the Java Language Specification but include all kinds of declarations too. Roughly s poken, NCSS is approximately equivalent to counting ';' and '{' characters in Java source files.

Not counted are empty statements, empty blocks or semicolons after closing brackets. Of course, comments don't get counted too. Closing brackets also never get counted, the same applies to blocks in general.

Examples
Package declarationpackage java.lang;
Import declarationimport java.awt.*;
Class declaration
  • public class Foo {
  • public class Foo extends Bla {
Interface declarationpublic interface Able ; {
Field declaration
  • int a;
  • int a, b, c = 5, d = 6;
Method declaration
  • publ ic void cry();
  • public void gib() throws DeadException {
Constructor declarationpublic Foo() {
Constructor invocation
  • this();
  • super();
Statement declaration
  • i = 0;
  • if (ok)
  • if (exit) {
  • if (3 == 4);
  • if (4 == 4) { ;
  • } else {
Label declarationfine :

In some cases consecutive semicolons are illegal according to the JLS but JavaNCSS still tolerates them (thought JavaNCSS is still more strict as 'javac'). Nevertheless they are never counted as two statements.

Cyclomatic Complexity Number (CCN)

CCN is also know as McCabe Metric. There exists a much hyped theory behind it based on graph theory, but it all comes down to simply counting 'if', 'for', 'while' statements etc. in a method. Whenever the control flow of a method splits, the "CCN counter" gets incremented by one.

Each method has a minimum value of 1 per default. For each of the following Java keywords/statements this value gets incremented by one:

  • if
  • for
  • while
  • case
  • catch

Also if the control flow of a method returns abortively the CCNvalue will be incremented by one:

  • if
  • for

An ordinary return at the end of method will not be counted.

Note that 'else', 'default', and 'finally' don't increment the CCN value any further. On the other hand, a simple method with a 'switch' statement and a huge block of 'case' statements can have a surprisingly high CCN value (still it has the same value when converting a 'switch' block to an equivalent sequence of 'if' st atements).

Cycles

[ summary ] [ packages ] [ cycles ] [ explanations ]

There are no cyclic dependencies.

Explanation

[ summary ] [ packages ] [ cycles ] [ explanations ]

The following explanations are for quick reference and are lifted directly from the original JDepend documentation.

TermDescription
Number of ClassesThe number of concrete and abstract classes (and interfaces) in the package is an indicator of the extensibility of the package.
Afferent CouplingsThe number of other packages that depend upon classes within the package is an indicator of the package's responsibility.
Efferent CouplingsThe number of other packages that the classes in the package depend upon is an indicator of the package's independence.
AbstractnessThe ratio of the number of abstract classes (and interfaces) in the analyzed package to the total number of classes in the analyzed package. The range for this metric is 0 to 1, with A=0 indicating a completely concrete package and A=1 indicating a completely abstract package.
InstabilityThe ratio of efferent coupling (Ce) to total coupling (Ce / (Ce + Ca)). This metric is an indicator of the package's resilience to change. The range for this metric is 0 to 1, with I=0 indicating a completely stable package and I=1 indicating a completely instable package.
DistanceThe perpendicular distance of a package from the idealized line A + I = 1. This metric is an indicator of the package's balance between abstractness and stability. A package squarely on the main sequence is optimally balanced with respect to its abstractness and stability. Ideal packages are either completely abstract and stable (x=0, y=1) or completely concrete and instable (x=1, y=0). The range for this metric is 0 to 1, with D=0 indicating a package that is coincident with the main sequence and D=1 indicating a package that is as far from the main sequence as possible.
CyclesPackages participating in a p ackage dependency cycle are in a deadly embrace with respect to reusability and their release cycle. Package dependency cycles can be easily identified by reviewing the textual reports of dependency cycles. Once these dependency cycles have been identified with JDepend, they can be broken by employing various object-oriented techniques.
