you could take a look at the generated Java file (contrarch_xml.java). 
AFAIK it's located in the work directory of the servlet engine 
($TOMCAT_home/work/cocoon, /tmp/Jetty__8888__, etc.).

The generated code (lines 6424-6424) might give you a clue what's wrong.
