Hi,

just to answer my own question: the problem was due to a dependency 
mismatch. I had in the pom.xml the following:

     <dependency>
       <groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
       <artifactId>spring-jdbc</artifactId>
       <version>2.5.1</version>
     </dependency>

Changing the version to 2.0.6 removed the exception.
