Er, wrap it in CDATA tags?

<![CDATA[<?xml version="1.0"?>
]]>

Make sure nothing comes before <?. Must be first char in file.

Dunno if that would do it. But then, I'm not sure if I really understand 
what you're trying to do, as I don't know the tutorial you're talking 
about :-(
