Hmm.  But I do not necessarily know in advance
what the "http://mysite.mydomain.com" is going to
be .. what match should I be using?  and in 
which sitempa?

It'll try to GET http://mysite.mydomain.com/favicon.ico 

Match it in your sitemap accordingly and point a reader to an .ico file.
