You can use a combination of fd:hint (see 
http://cocoon.apache.org/2.1/userdocs/forms/widget_field.html) and 
fd:failmessage (see 
http://cocoon.apache.org/2.1/userdocs/forms/validation.html for 
example). If you want to have a messages area on your form you can use 
an fd:messages or fd:output widget.
