Side comment: aren't the extensions linked to a specific
processor e.g. Xalan or Saxon... or there are extensions
that work for all of them?

Also note that is long as you're using XSLT extensions, if you're just

getting the current date and time then http://org.exslt/dates-and-times

already has a function for this, there's no reason to drag the Cocoon 
pipeline into it :-)
