The 'mailto:' link is still rendered as portal link, even if there is an
external="true" attribute. 

On the other hand: It detects external links perfectly, if there is an
http:// in the beginning of the href attribute value. Then it stays an
external link.

Is there any more trick, I miss?

Try <a external="true" href="...">

Then it does not transform links.
