This is a basic XSLT question.  The XSLT processor doesn't do what you 
expect it to "by defualt", i.e. when it finds no template to match a 
node.  You need to include an "identity transformation", something like 
this:

         <xsl:template match="node() | @*">
                 <xsl:copy>
                         <xsl:apply-templates select="node() | @*"/>
                 </xsl:copy>
         </xsl:template>
