I use this in my /etc/profile file

PATH="/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin"
PATH="$PATH:/Library/Ant/bin"
PATH="$PATH:/Library/Postgresql/bin"

export PATH

JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/Home
JAVA_OPTIONS='-Dfile.encoding=iso-8859-1'

ANT_HOME=/Library/Ant

export JAVA_HOME
export ANT_HOME
export JAVA_OPTIONS

[ -r /etc/bashrc ] && source /etc/bashrc
